Basically, there are two types of Roku remotes: Simple and Enhanced. A simple Roku remote uses an infrared beam to operate the Roku device, so it doesn’t need to pair. On the other hand, the Enhanced remote works via RF radio waves, so it needs to be paired with the Roku device to control it. This guide shows the procedure for pairing the Roku voice remote with the streaming stick or TV powered by Roku.
How to Pair Existing Roku Voice Remote
If your Roku Voice Remote suddenly stops responding to the commands, it means that the remote has unpaired. You can re-pair the Roku remote to make it work. Before you start, update your Roku device to the latest firmware.
1. Once the Roku device is turned on, hold the Pairing button on the remote for about five seconds.
Note: If your Roku remote is rechargeable, you can find the Pairing button on the remote’s backside. For the Roku remote that uses removable batteries, the Pairing button will be inside the battery compartment.
2. Keep the remote closer to the Roku device to make the remote pairing successful.
3. You will get a “Pairing remote…” notification on the Roku screen once it is connected.
Note: If you own a Roku Streaming Stick, ensure you use an HDMI extender to improve the connection stability. You can order an HDMI extender for your Roku device by visiting https://my.roku.com/HDMI.
Pairing a New or Second Roku Voice Remote
If you have bought a new Roku Voice Remote, you can pair it with your device by navigating to its settings.
1. Scroll down the Roku home screen and click the Settings option.
2. On the right pane of the settings menu, select the Remotes & devices option.
3. Following that, tap Remotes on the right pane of the TV screen.
4. Click Add devices on the next page, select Remote, and tap Continue.
5. The Remote setup screen will be shown. Select the remote based on how the microphone pinhole is present.
6. Locate and hold the Pairing button on the Roku remote until the LED blinks green.
Note: If your Roku remote doesn’t have a pairing button, hold the Back and Home buttons for five seconds.
7. Based on the remote type you choose, you will see some additional instructions on the TV screen to finish setting it up.
Once you complete the steps, you can use the Roku remote to adjust the volume and turn the Roku TV on or off.
Steps to Unpair a Roku Remote
If you can’t pair a new Roku remote, you can unpair the existing remote and then try the pairing steps.
1. Hold the Home, Back, and Pairing buttons on your Roku remote for three to five seconds.
2. As a result, the Roku remote’s LED light will flash three times.
3. Now, you can press the Roku remote buttons randomly. If your Roku device doesn’t respond, the remote has been unpaired.
